If you need to do a paternity test, the hair must be with the hair follicle. In this case, the hair must be with the hair follicle. If the hair is not too busy, this kind of hair does not meet the standards for paternity testing. Hair with follicles is required, or it can be directly pulled from the head.
Can hair without follicles be used for paternity testing? When we are highly suspicious of whether the child is biological, we will choose to use the technology of paternity testing to find the truth. However, there are many types of samples for paternity testing, and hair is one of the samples. Because hair is easier to collect, it is currently one of the more commonly used samples besides blood. So, can hair without follicles be used for paternity testing?
Forensic answer: Hair can be used for paternity testing, but it must be hair with follicles. Hair that is normal and does not have follicles cannot be used as a test sample. Only hair that has been freshly removed and has a white follicle at the root qualifies as a valid sample. So, how to collect hair samples?
1. Grab the hair about 4 cm from the root and quickly pull out 3-5 hairs (the end of the hair can be seen with a clear follicle, i.e. white substance at the root of the hair).
2. The hair that has just been pulled out should be air-dried naturally, and then wrapped in a clean tissue, because the hair follicle is very viscous when first pulled out. If the hair follicle is not dried and then wrapped in a tissue, it is easy to damage the follicle.
3. Samples from different people should be placed separately to avoid touching each other and affecting the quality of the test. Samples from different people should be placed in different paper envelopes, and the identity and name of the person to whom the sample belongs should be clearly marked on the envelope.
Other than this: Therefore, hair without follicles cannot be used as a sample for paternity testing. In order to ensure the accuracy of the test results, I suggest that everyone strictly follow the above steps when collecting hair samples to avoid the collection of invalid samples, which would result in the need for a second sample and inconvenience for you. In addition, when we do paternity testing, we must strictly follow the process of collecting samples.
How to do paternity testing with hair?

What should be noted when collecting hair samples for paternity testing?
1. It is recommended to submit the test sample for testing within two weeks after collection. Samples that have been stored for too long are not completely unusable for paternity testing. But because of the longer time, the DNA test may be affected, so the results cannot be guaranteed. However, if there is no other choice, our center can try. If results are obtained, they will not affect the testing process. Besides this, the hair that naturally falls off can be tried for testing. However, it cannot be guaranteed that enough DNA can be extracted, affecting the accuracy of the test. Small children should avoid using hair as a testing sample. In general, children under 3 years of age should avoid using hair for testing. Because young children are too small, the development of hair follicles is not complete, and it is likely that enough DNA cannot be extracted. For children, we recommend using oral swabs as testing samples for DNA paternity testing.
2. Can hair without follicles be used for paternity testing?
Hair can be used for DNA testing, but it must ensure that it has follicles, and hair that has been cut or naturally shed cannot be used for DNA testing. This is because only samples that include the nucleus of somatic cells can be used for DNA testing.
